NIKON PHOTOGRAPHERS: OUR INTERVIEW TO MATTIA BONAVIDA – PART II

As we already told you in the first part of this post, Mattia Bonavida is a young Italian photographer which passion for photography and his territory led him to be one of the most popular artists of Nikon photography. Fascinated by the many stunning pictures he captured, we wanted to tell you more about him, and here’s the second part of his interview.

  1. When does a picture totally satisfy your expectations and which are according to you, the main aspects that characterize a good shot?

Even after shooting thousand of photos a year, it’s really difficult for me to say, ‘’Wow, this  is exactly the photo I was looking for!’’. In my opinion, to be really impressive, a photo must be almost unique and personal, how? You have to put inside the frame something that helps attract the attention, for example when shooting landscape I love to have a human presence in the photo maybe dressing a red, blue, green, yellow dress that make contrast in the scene.

  1. Let’s talk about travel and travel photography. Do you like travel? And How much time do you dedicate to take photograph when you travel?

I really like travel so much because, travelling you can discover new ways to approach life, new traditions, new cultures and obviously new people that will help you growing in the society. When travelling I try every time to dedicate a lot of time to take photos, for example in September I was in Cologne, Germany, for the Photokina, the biggest photo fair in the world. After visiting the fair I went around the city up late in the night trying to get some particular shots, and in this way I got some good photos at sunset!

It’s important to remember that taking photos takes a lot of time, so when you have to arrange everything you need to consider this.

  1. Which part of your equipment do you consider crucial, even when you travel?

Normally I bring with me a wide angle lens 14 mm, and a 85 mm lens for some street shots or portraits. If I travel to a particular destination where it is possible to capture great landscapes I bring absolutely my tripod and my Nisi Filters, and a remote shutter command.

  1. Have you ever traveled without shooting or without your camera?

No, I didn’t because every time that I went out of home without my camera I missed a lot of opportunities to take awesome shots!

  1. Which are your favorite subjects when you travel? What do you look for? And what should a travel picture communicate according to you?

My favorite subject are mainly landscapes or natural spots, that why I love so much the Alps and Dolomites! Then I love to capture common life scene just walking around the city with my 85 mm lens. In my opinion, a travel picture should communicate the essence of a place; when you are approaching a new country the first rule that you have to remember is to respect the locals and don’t get too much into the scene because doing that you will lose some of the essence of the moment.

  1. We are particularly interested in the relation between travel and photography, can you please tell us something about a travel experience that has been particularly touching or interesting for you? Where would you suggest us to go?

That’s related to my personal taste, I love mountains and nature so much, so when I decide to travel I immediately think about Alps and Dolomites; these places are really so amazing,  you can literally feel the nature around you, and sleeping in a tent on the top of a mountain peak is something you need to try at least once in your lifetime!

Actually I would suggest to visit a beautiful Italian valley, Val Badia. Moving from small towns to the top of the Dolomites allows you to capture incredible shots, and you must visit the great Lake Braies, one of the most famous lake in the Dolomites. In the early morning the lake creates stunning reflections on the water!
