- Hello Marko, and welcome on MasterPhotoTour. Thank you for having accepted to discuss with us the relation between photography and social media. We are sure a lot of people will be interested in reading about it… To start, how can these instruments be useful for professional photographers? What should a professional expected from it and its use?
Well, first of all, let me specify that according to me, today, the definition of photographer is very wide. Beside my experience on the field in fact, I have no certificates to define myself as a master photographer, but I believe that a photographer could define himself as a professional one when he can succeeded in do of his passion a real profession.
By the way, concerning the relationship between social media and photography, personally I consider that social network, Instagram in particular, really helped me a lot in giving me visibility. I started photographing several years ago, when I was 8 or 9, Instagram didn’t exist yet, and Facebook was not what it is today.
I started with an analog camera, developing my pictures with the few savings I had when I was a child. Whatever come before the social was extremely different from what social network allowed us to do years after: I evolved with my photography moving from the mobile phone to a compact camera and then to a reflex.
But when I started with my reflex still Instagram didn’t exist and my photography was extremely different than my actual one. At the beginning I had 2 profiles, one dedicated to my Iphone photography and one dedicated to photographs captured with a camera, while today I tend to use my reflex only to shoot.
Even though many photographers don’t like Instagram, I could affirm that the relationship between social and photography has been positive to me, because it really helped me a lot in evolving my photographic style. Moreover, it has been essential for letting me become more popular and spread my photos.
Beside the fact that I would keep on doing photography because it is my passion, what I really would like to affirm is that I obviously do photography firstly and foremost for myself, but I’m interested in showing my pictures to many people possible and the appreciation coming from these people who value what I do, is an incentive to me to do even more; social network has this function too on my job, pushing me to work harder.
- What should a professional photographer who uploads his pictures on social media expect according to you?
A professional photographer should expect exactly to become more popular according to me, because the surplus value of social media is precisely this opportunity to share his art, increasing the number of people that follow him and that could become future clients. What is more, social media allow you to explore new fields of photography without necessarily changing the personal style, they give the opportunity to taste new “territories”.
