After the introduction of the issue in the first part of this post, we move forward with our interview with Marko Morciano to discover the strong relationship between photography and social media marketing.
- What about a non professional photographer? Should him also understand better the actual ways of photography?
Whether you are a professional or not, social media are able to give you exactly these things and, moreover, they give the same opportunity to anyone.
Photography is not necessarily different on the social, it depends from any person’s choice: someone might be less interested in capturing pictures that perfectly fit and belong to the “social field” while some others could be more interested on it. The relation between social and photography is very strong according to me as they could evolve together and a photographer can change his photographic style because it works better on social media than his traditional one.
Effectively, this worked for many photographers whom, influenced by social media (Instagram more than others), decided to evolve following a particular photographic style made up of colors, lights and contrasts. Social media could guide photographers choices indeed, but everything is related to someone’s personal vision of photography: a lot of people post on Instagram just to obtain likes and comments from followers, but if your idea of photography is more related to tradition and art, you will probably not be a great fan of social media.
Once more, according to me, sharing pictures just for the pleasure to be involved and participate, or be part of a community has a meaning for a photographer too, otherwise, posting online just to collect likes, well… that has nothing in common with photography.
I usually call it “pre-photography”: it means thinking about the photo before being there, without the opportunity to truly live the experience and let it guide you in your photographic approach. And that feeling is an important part to me.
- Instagram, Flickr, 500px… which are the best social media for a photographer? What’s the difference between them and Instagram?
I know 500px because I used it years ago, as well as Flickr but I think that they are a bit “old” if compared to other, more popular social media. I actually “abandoned” them and I would not consider them as the best social media for a photographer precisely because they are thought merely for professional photography, even though, as always, everything depends on your consideration of photography.
You could prefer a more “niche” social media than a popular and more mainstream way to share your pictures. What’s essential according to me is the ability to use them appropriately for the use they have been thought for. Beside this, being the social media of the moment, Instagram offers more opportunities than any other in terms of visibility. Facebook too is highly powerful for both communication and personal promotion, but it is not as focused on photography as Instagram is, so the attention of the user is not “centered” on images but distracted by texts and links.
Moreover, Instagram could be considered more social than Facebook because it helps more in develop nets and give birth to communities, friendships relations or creating business collaborations. In this sense it works better than Facebook because it allowed and still allows to organize face-to-face meetings, creating in this way a more stronger communities and long-lasting bonds.
By the way, many photographers use Facebook creating pages of high quality level of contents with high engagement, that’s even because in terms of sponsorship it is more complete and powerful than Instagram.
