Name: Laura Masi
City: Florence
Camera: Canon mirrorless
Main photographic subject: Landscape photography and architecture photography, I like to focus on the architectural geometries and the light games that can be created.
Style: I have a very simple style, I always focus a lot on the geometries of what I see. The subject of photography, rather than technique, is the protagonist of my photos.
Favorite destinations: Italy is an incredible nation, never cease to fall in love with my country, from the rough landscapes of the Dolomites to the soft ones of my Tuscany, to the blue of Apulia, with all its beautiful cities: Venice, Naples, Florence… Among the journeys I have done lately, I like a lot Strasbourg and Munich.
Influences: The list would be very long: Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassa, Steve McCurry, Helmut Newton, Elliot Erwitt just to name a few. Now I’m very focused on social networks: many would not approve what I’m saying, but spending many hours on Instagram I’ve met virtually some talented photographers who inspire me every day with their publications on this social.

When did you start with photography?
Photography has always been a great passion to me, since I was a child. I have a drawer full of photos taken with automatic machines or even “use and thrown” tools during school trips, but there are also many diapositives of summer holidays with my family.
Where does this passion come from?
My older brother used an Olympus OM10 and I learned with that the first principles of photography. I have always been amazed by the power of photography to stop an instant: in those photos there are still impressed the emotions, the laughter, the scents and the colors of that moment.
What do you look for in photography?
In photography I look for a moment to tell, the fugacity of an instant. It may seem trivial to say so, but thanks to the use of social networks, I’m more and more aware of how conveying a story in the fuzziness of a moment, encompassing the story and beauty of a place in a photo.
What does photography mean to you?
For me it is a way of expressing myself and talking to others. Sharing my great passion for the journey and my adventures, the places I liked, the people I meet. I’ve always found in photography a direct and immediate way to show the world as I see it, and for me it is a unique satisfaction to be able to convey my emotions to others.
What should photography communicate according to you?
Emotions. I always look for very powerful photos that can excite you even from the screen of your phone, as if you could be transported in that moment, in the place where the photo was taken.
It is not easy to make a photo alive, to remove that cold and detached layer: it is not only a matter of technique, I think it is needed a lot of tune with the medium and a deep knowledge of yourself: only in this way you’ll be able to impress thoughts and emotions on your photos.
Do you conceive photography as an instinctive or a more planned activity?
I think of it as an instinctive activity, maybe because of my character, I find that the extremely technical and static photos are too cold and can’t share emotions with me. Those glances captured in an instant, that ray of sunshine that filters in the clouds, a gull that pass in front of your camera in the exact moment you are about to take a picture at the sea, or those guys holding hands in the streets of a city, all of this makes that moment special and alive.
What inspires you the most when you travel?
I travel very instinctively, letting me carry (or overwhelm) by emotions and then try to share them in a picture. Thanks to Instagram I now tend to “study” the city where I will go, to have an idea of how it is made and its glimpses, and to be sure not to miss any of it.
