TRAVEL AND PHOTOGRAPHY. A STRONG RELATION

Have you ever wondered about the relation between travel and photography? As you can imagine, the boundary between them is very strong, but also more ancient than you could think.

It all started with a camera, when already in 1839, people recognized the ability of this instrument to capture, represent and fix the many extraordinary beauties of the world, that was the first idea around travel photography.

The spread of the use of the camera started with their “simplification” in order to make them appropriate for mobility and travel. Thanks to this consideration, through the years cameras reached a technology able to make the shooting almost automatic, so that anyone, even unprofessional people, could take a photograph of their happy moments, giving a new shape at leisurely photography.

Of course, the need for travel has been always present, as great photographer teach us:

“If you are out there shooting, things will happen for you. If you’re not out there, you’ll only hear about it.” – Jay Maisel

For this reason, someone considers as a little bit tautological to have “travel photography” as a separate category, as well most of the open air photography should be related to some kind of travel.

Kodak was the first one in doing this at the end of the 1880. This more user-friendly object, together with the growing of  the social importance of tourism and memories, made photography an “ordinary” and delightful activity, able to fix beloved people and places, and to create a new set of photographic memories much more resistant and durable than the human memory.

A long way has been done since then and these first successful attempts; travel photography has seriously evolved so much and this art has enriched itself with professionals and new perspectives. But passion for photography is anchored to these same basics, ideas and thoughts.

Today more than ever, travel photography is a powerful instrument to tell stories of meaningful moments and display love and life. They can capture family members celebrating life, approaching what is far in time and space and conserving instants making them permanent, while documenting that something really happened.

Our suggestion is to remember that a travel is a fulfilling experience. Don’t be afraid to lose yourself in the adventure and if you want to have extraordinary pictures, don’t just wander in search of the same image as everyone else does. Consider to construct your own photographic story, creating a photographic narration of your trip and think about the many aspects of a travel beyond the place itself: people, light and details

If you are in search for inspiration, take a look at our photo tours and learn how to develop your technical and creative skills with a master photographer.
